Hello,
This is my first post so be kind ;)

Well i want to upgrade my cpu at year end and I don't know if the FX 4100 is worth the buy.

I personaly think this cpu is still ok for now. I am a serious gamer and play Battlefield 3 (online) everyday at medium settings. So can you guys tel me if i should upgrade my cpu or gpu first?

My system specs:

Cpu: Intel core 2 duo E8500 @ 3.6 ghz
Gpu: HD 4850 512MB
Ram: Corsair 4gig ddr2 800
PSU: Superchannel S500 :??:

(Sorry if my English is bad :na: )

It only supports Intel's socket 775. If you can tell me if the fx 4100 is worth buying for battlefield 3 playing at 1280x1024 resolutions then i am going to by a new motherboard , and ram with the fx-4100.

What i want to buy:

RAM: http://www.comx-computers.co.za/computer-hardware.php?cat=461

MOBO : http://www.comx-computers.co.za/760GM-P21-FX-MSI-AMD-760GM-P21FX-Motherboard-Information-Price-Buy-Cheap-p-63545.php

CPU: http://www.comx-computers.co.za/FD4100WMGUSBX-AMD-FX-4100-3-6GHz-Quad-Core-Socket-AM3-Bulldozer-Series-CPU-Information-Price-Buy-Cheap-p-52653.php

Is this a good upgrade or should i rather upgrade my GPU ?

Sorry if I was unclear. :)

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.6 GHz. Are you sure about this...???
I think it is 3.16 GHz.

OK. Thanks allot. So I will upgrade my cpu first and then later on upgrade my gpu ? (looking for a hd 6850 :bounce: ).

If the main purpose is gaming than IMO no the Bulldozer and Piledriver aren't worth it. The I5 is the best choice and is far ahead in perfomance especially in single threaded programs like games. The I5 is faster and more effcient than anything AMD offers right now.

I realy like Intel cpu's but i am on a real tight budget at the moment so i will stick to my current build and save up for Intel .

Passmark is a joke and can't be taken seriously, it is one of the worst benchmarking programs. Here are some real benchmarks:

Well how tight, what is your budget? You could also go with the I3 it's cheaper and will perform just fine on pretty much all games.

Yes, you should upgrade your CPU & Mobo first, and then bother about GPU.

And, Really, FX 4100 isn't worth it. Even an Intel Pentium G2120 beats it in most of the gaming benchmarks.

If you really are a serious gamer. extend your budget a bit and go for Intel Core i5 3570K.

It's worth every penny, and I bet, you won't regret it, even if you run it at stock speed.

And, after you overclock it, you can do wonders, believe me. AMD Stands nowhere when it comes to i5 or higher. (I'm impressed at your overclocking ability with your Core 2 Duo. I think you'll prove to be a good master of 3570K !!!).

For, the Mobo, pick up a Z77. Gigabyte or ASUS.

@rds1220 No argue, but according to your post, 3470 is better than 3570k or 3770k? I wouldn't say that Passmark is a joke. You can't judge a CPU only through game performnce, where from a certain level up what does count is the GPU and not the CPU.

Passmark is highly unreliable and uses results submitted by end users. This can easily skew the results. It's no better than going onto NewEgg and using the "reviews" as proof as to how good or bad a CPU is. There is nothing scientific about the process and it's to easy to have bias or skew results.

Not a very good value for money, but still, a very nice option.
I wonder if you could extend your budget to at least i5 3450, a generation ahead, with no significant price difference.

Yes that makes sence! Will save for the i5 3450! You guys really helped me not to waste my money to buy AMD ***. :D

Something else to think about, do you plan on overclocking? If not than the I5 3450 is fine, if you do plan on overclocking you will want to get 3570K. You won't really be able to overclock the 3450, not to the same level as a CPU with an unlocked multiplier like 2500k or 3570K.

Good performance in BF3 multiplayer requires 4+ cores, good single thread performance and good gpu performance - its a greedy pig!
I presume single player frame rates at 1280x1024 are ok otherwise upgrade gpu.
If you want a higher frame rate in multiplayer then consider upgrading cpu to second hand socket 775 core 2 quad (for the right price!) and overclock it.
Haswell will be released in second quarter of 2013 with a new socket - so not the right time to buy socket 1155.
FX 4100 has 4 cores but poor single thread performance compared to intel - even with overclock its not a great upgrade.
I advise wait until Haswell for cpu upgrade if possible - many will upgrade - second hand cpu and motherboard prices could be good.

Thanks for the advice. With my current setup i get around 28-40 frames on medium settings (depending on map size).

Is the new Haswell product an Intel product? Will it be afordable? And will it be socket 775?
