Card too powerful for motherboard

Hi I installed a graphics card that turned out to be too powerful for my motherboard, and have
since had some weird 'heat' symptoms from my PC, even after uninstalling the card.
I wasn't sure if this should be in the motherboard forum, so sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I installed an Asus GTX550ti 'Dirrect CU' card into my
Intel G31 Express Chipset Motherboard.

As soon as I turned on the PC after installation, it's hard to's kind of like it was running hotter only more like electrical
waves, like when you sit too close to the TV only times ten. It felt really
weird like something was wrong so I turned the PC off right away. I
uninstalled the card, did system restore, and removed all the Nvidida drivers
that came with it. I also went into BIOS and checked all the power settings
and turned whatever I could down.

...Then I turned it back on and even after taking out the card and all those
changes I could still feel this electrical heat coming off the PC.
I found out my system specs weren't high enough, and I didn't connect this
six-pin connector thing 'cause my power suplly didn't have the connection.

I know it sounds weird but if someone could just please ammuse me on this...

Could anyone tell me what kind of changes installing a too powerful card
could have made to the power coming off the mother board? Did I fry the 'volt
rails' or something so now they are permanently screwed? (noob theory).
Is there any way to reverse what changes I may have made on the software side?

  1. It shouldn't have that much of an impact, but you really do need to connect that 6 pin connector.
  2. There really isnt such a thing as a graphics card too powerful for your motherboard. Whats happening is your power supply isnt powerful enough for the card
  3. My Power supply is ATX12V 450, and my CPU is Intel Dual 2.5.

    This article has system requirments:

    "The ASUS Ultimate GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB video card requires a 400 Watt or
    greater power supply with a minimum of 24 Amps on the +12 volt rail. It also requires that the power supply has one 6-pin PCI Express power connector for
    proper connection. It should be noted that the NVIDIA minimum system power
    requirement is based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz CPU."
  4. Just because your power supply is rated for the correct wattage , that doesnt mean it puts out enough amperage on the +12v rail. You also mentioned in the original post that you didnt have a 6 pin power connector. Without having that plugged into the card it wont get enough power no matter how powerful the powersupply is. The ammount of amps available is more the determining factor than the wattage. This 430 watt has 28a +12v.
    And here is a cheap 500 watt, with only 17a +12v:

  5. there is a label but it doesn't list just one amp , there's a 'DC output table....
    +5V = 45A
    +12V1= 17A
    +3.3V= 30A
    -12V= 1.0A

    I guess if it's called ATX12V 2.01 the amps would be 17 or 16.
  6. You need a new power supply.. You're lucky if you didn't fry your system with using underpowered Power supply. I'd suggest this one:

    ok now that we've identified a potential 'cause i'll just re-iterate my question...

    Right now I'm not concentrating getting the card to work I'm wondering what it may
    have done to the power coming off the mother board or system if it did indeed alter it in some way.
    The PC still runs fine but I can tell it's giving something kind of electrical heat off since
    installing the I described in my first post.

    So It's probably something to do with the power supply not being strong enough that kind of fried my system?
    Could you describe what kind of damage that does? Is that something that effects the mother board or the power supply?
    Like what would it have damaged? Cause maybe I can salvage the CPU or my hard drive.

    And I guess that means there isn't anything to do on the software/BIOS side to reverse whatever is going on?
