Celerons and Pentiums...

My friend keeps telling me that all Pentiums are single core, and the "dual core pentiums" are actually core duos and not pentiums. Celerons on the other hand are dual core.

Is it also true that pentiums have hyperthreading while celerons don't?

What generation are you talking about? Your friend is both right and wrong. Pentium and Celeron are both names that Intel has attribiuted to several processor architectures over the past ~20 years. Some were dual cores, some were single cores, some have HyperThreading, some don't.

I've got a Pentium 4 1.8GHZ 32 bit Single core CPU from 2001 before Core2Duos were dreamed up.

Just celerons and pentiums in general. So are pentiums with 2 cores technically still pentiums and not core duos? Or do they fall under the category of both?

They are what Intel says they are. If they say its a Pentium with 2 cores, its a Pentium with 2 cores lol. Like I said, I've got a single core pentium from before Core2s even existed.

Which Celeron's and which Pentium's? Because it matters here.

Pentium 4's can be single core, Dual core or single with HT.

The newer Pentium's (after the P4's) are all Dual Core, while at least one of the newer Celeron's is only single core.

In any case, the Core 2 Duo's are not Pentium's or Celeron's. Completely different thing altogether.

Yea, then theres Pentium III, Pentium II, and Pentium I.. All of these date back to probably before you and your friend were even born. All single cores, all pre-IntelCore.

I actually had a Slot 1 Pentium 3 system at one time... It was just a project system, though, so nothing much ever came of it.
