So this is currently my rig:

asrock z68 extreme3 gen3: motherboard
Corsair 750tx: Power supply
8gb gskillz ddr3 1333mhz: ram
1tb seasonic hard drive
Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 OC WindForce CCC 12.4
Intel i5 2500k O/C to 4.6 ghz

I upgrade to the 7970 from my sapphire 6870 and havent been getting the performance that I had expected. I usually play desert strike on starcraft 2 and towards late game I would be getting around 30 fps on the 6870. With the 7970 I only saw a slight increase to just 35 fps which seems awfully low. I also gave LoL a try where my 6870 would maintain 60 fps through out the game. My 7970 however would suffer random drops to 45 fps and occasionally in the 50's which seems very very odd to me Is there something wrong with my card? or driver issues? im a bit puzzled

Yes I love Desert Strike too. That is strange that the 7970 did not help. I run with a 5870 and I7 and get 8 fps in sudden death (high settings) around 20 fps in low. What do you get in sudden death?

I Know a guy that upgraded to a 6970 and got 18 fps in high. It could be drivers, I tried 12.4 but had crashes in some games so I went back to 12.3.

Also before installing new drivers from AMD always use driversweeper by phyxion.

1. Run Driver sweeper and click amd
2. It will clean out all AMD drivers
3. Reboot - should be in lower rez if it took them all out
4. Run AMD driver install and reboot

This solved many driver issues in the past. AMD uninstall utility does not clean out all the drivers and I've had a mismatch between old and new in the past causing massive slow downs.

Give it a try.
