Msi Z77 Mobo + 7970 - no video output

I just bought a new gaming computer with ivy bridge, msi z77 gd45 and a 7970. Whenever I install the gpu, i get no video output and if i remove it, the internal video only works after rebooting several times. Any suggestions?

with your advice i actually managed to get the gpu recognized. somehow there is still no video output though if i attach the hdmi cable directly to the gpu

did you put the power cable on the video card
