So I am getting a computer by either end of May or the latest by the end of June. I was wondering which gfx card is better because it seems that nvidia's 600 series will not be out for a while and that only the OEMs and not the retail version of it are out.

Also would it better to get 1 AMD or 2 or SLI (I think I am using this right) GTX 580s. I just want to get the very best for my first computer i want to build.

The GeForce GTX 690 and GeForce GTX 680 have already been launched.

If your lucky you may be able to find a vendor that has one in stock to sell to you.

Well it seems that they are sold out still. Any ideas about additional shipments?

Would anyone happen to know how the two compare. Is the 680 worth the price jump? I will probably build my computer by the end of this month and am just curious since I am a noob at these things XD!

1 7970, then Crossfire it later. How much price jump are there in the 680 compared to 7970? As far as I know 7970 is $480 and 680 $500. The reason I tell you 7970 is because 680 is always out of stock.

Interesting information. Will leave this open maybe for a little more for some more answers.

Just a quick point if you are waiting for a month, it may make sense to see how the GTX 670 from nvidia turns out. The rumours have the 670 in the same performance bracket as the 7950 and should be competitive with the 7970 also (slotting in the middle, plus with OC early reviews have the 670 pegged at 680 levels)

By the end of this month more cards will be released, the GTX 670/670ti (I'm not sure if there's a Ti) And it's said to be very promising to compete with HD 7970. But still the main problem which is availability and pricing. Couple days ago one of the overclocking forum's members got his hands on a GTX 670 for $525.

Sapphire Toxic HD 7970 is supposed to be coming soon, It's 1150/1500 MHz respectively out of the box, it should be performing like a GTX 680.

Cool. I guess I will just wait until I get all of my money and work using some of the answers in this topic. To me it seems like I should just get the 7970 since it is cheaper and more available then the GTX 600 series but I will just wait and see from there.

Would you happen to know the price of the Sapphire Toxic? I was looking at newegg and I saw a bunch of 7970s that were 499.99 (with 3 free games).

The gtx 680 is now available enough and it's faster than the 7970, besides you can always make it sli which beats a single gtx 690. Good luck

as far as I know prices and release date hasn't been announced yet. Also I hear there'll be a 3GB as well as 6GB version of the toxic... I wouldn't be surprised if they price the 6GB version $600+, but I doubt they'll price the 3GB toxic a lot higher than the MSI lightning, so probably around $550-600

Uggggghh. This information has been regurgitated about umpteeeen million times. 580 or 680? 680 or 7970? pricing? availability? yada yada yada

Dude, about every tech website on the internet has covered this subject in great deal. Even right here on Tom's, then they got bored and reviewed FIVE different 7970's. This has been covered and reviewed to the gills, so just do a little research and you'll undoubtedly answer your own question. And using the cover of "My first build.....don't want to screw this up...." is all the more reason for you to be doing more self research instead of just asking simple questions. Try really really hard to answer your own question FIRST, and then if absolutely needed ask your mom to get you the biggest, shiniest, gfx card newegg has to offer at the time you build.

Definately worth considering the 680 if you are looking at a 7970. The 580 wont give you that kind of performance.

The OP was thinking of two GTX 580 in SLI mode.

I just believe it would be better to go with a 680 or 7970 , they both perform really well, for some the performance is that great that they wont even consider going SLI or xfire with them.

Nah man, I'm good. Mommy got me 3. It just gets a lil exhaustive when you see the same post asking the same question over and over and then all the same responses. Don't get me wrong, I like forums and what they can do for people. But honestly, I believe there is a minimum, and people should try answering some of their questions themselves. Do you run to mommy and ask her every question that pops into your mind?

lol if they price it 600$+in the US then in my country that would be well over 33,000-45000 (700-800$ "not exactly")

42.31 = 1$ ahahaha lazy to calcu.

but damn 6gb of 7970 should be sexy i'm thinking of 7-9 monitor setup and see how it goes.

13440x1080 for 7 monitor and 17280x1080 should be awesome if successful but still a waste of money but worth a try

actualyl I agree with you there mate.

I mean if you can only ask 1 type of question then pretty much there won't be more than 1000 post in the entire section.

600$ build intel
600$ build amd
680vs7970vs 99999vs99999999vs9999999999vs9999999999 we know there are lots of answers on the net but people still want to ask, and we as people here give answers or advice.

this won't be much of a forum if that were the case (1 thread per certain topic)

example:
550$ build but theres a 600$ then gets deleted because there is already a existing one and just remove some parts or exchange. and so for so on ^_^

Seems I will most likely get a 7970 unless I can get an nvida 680 or 690? Are the 680/690 = the 7970 in power? From what I looked I believe the 680/690 is a bit better.
