Is there a way to change the naming of photos on the Canon 350D camera so
that they do not get confused with photos from IXUS 50 photos when
downloaded to the computer. ie change IMG_0001.

Why not download to different folders?

Just change the file numbering from 'continuous' to 'auto reset'.
The 350D has this and I think the IXUS 50 does too.

This will revert the numbering to IMG_0001 every time you
insert a blank memory card.

If you insert a card that has a running count, it will pick
up that count and continue incrementing. In this case you
could always format the card before using it. That would
ensure the count would reset to zero.

If the other camera is at something like IMG_2314, then the
camera with the resetting image numbers should never wind
up with a duplicate number.

You could rename either the files of the 350D or the Ixus.
Assuming only Ixus files are contained in a folder and you aren't
totally unfamiliar using commands in a DOS window, you could type:

REN IMG*.* IXG*.* <ENTER>

and your Ixus files would now have names like IXG_0001.JPG,
IXG_0002.JPG, etc, and could now be moved to folders containing your
350D's files without worrying about IXG_0007 replacing IMG_0007.
And of course if at a later date you wanted to restore the original
filenames you'd simply use REN IXG*.* IMG*.*

One of my bugbears ATM is the millions of photos floating around the
net with names like IMG_001 or PICT0001 or DSC001 etc. etc.
I use a card reader with the batch file renaming feature that
Irfanview has. I have my own date coded system that gives all my
pictures unique filenames that also make perfect sense to me, although
doubtless others will find their own better code. Point is that at
least it avoids the log jam of facing yet another IMG_001

It's boring but it's something.

On this date, Fred extended this wisdom for the consideration
of other readers...

Besides setting your camera to "remember" the last used number
in a sequence, you can also try batch renames in Windoze XP
and/or use an excellent file renaming utility called NameWiz,
USD$25. I use it for general renaming of pictures but first
bought it when my old Fuji 4900 would lose its marbles somehow
and reset the numbers back to 00001.

Download the trial of NameWiz and see if it helps you:

Get downloader pro from Breeze systems and set it to rename however
you want. http://www.breezesys.com/

I personally have it set to Year_Number_Camera.JPG

Thankyou to all who replied. It is a pity that the in-camera file naming can
not be more flexible, but this Downloader Pro program seems to be what I
wanted. It looks like an excellent downloader with the ability to rename to
many options automatically and then start my cataloger/viewer (Thumbs +).
