I never got into the Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2 Beta and was wondering if anyone with either of those cards was able to play the games and how their FPS was. I'd like to get a geforce gtx 680 but the minimal stock nightmare is seeming to extend longer than I want. Will the HD 7970 handle those games well on ultra/max setting?

Diablo 3 takes about 1/3 of a 7970 at 1080p with all of the settings maxed. No idea how Guild Wars 2 runs.

HD 6770 can max the game out, it's not demanding at all.

6870, not 6770. Check out the benchmarks on the Tom's home page from today. If you aren't going to be playing demanding games, just get a cheap card. If you are, though, let's keep talking.

The 7970's not quite as good as the 680, and it costs somewhat less accordingly. It does have noise issues, though (read: sounds like a jet engine). If you're considering cards at the top end, I think the 680's a better choice, and it is currently available on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-GeForce-Express-Graphics-6...

So the AMD HD 7970 sounds like a jet engine? That's unfavorable. D3 and GW2 are the games I am certain I will be playing. I don't think either are considered high-end games, I just want to make sure I have literally 0 graphics problems handling them as well as want to future proof my rig.

I feel like they must have that flipped around or something on the chart

that all depends on what card you get, if you get a reference design card then yes it well be louder then the 680. if you get something like the saphire dual fan 7970 then you get a very cool and quit setup. the jet engine reference is just silly

ACTUALLY... In All the gaming tests and comparisons, the 7970 and GTX are pretty much equal performance wise. The ONLY notable difference is fan noise and heat under heavy load. The GTX 680 does run notably cooler in stock configuration BUT.. If you do a cooler upgrade to the 7970 it can and will run just as quiet if not more quiet than the GTX 680. On the 7970 plus side.. You can actually find and purchase one AND the prices are coming down to beat 680 prices. The 680 is SUPPOSED to sell for around $500.. but try finding one at that price! EBay is chock full of them at over exagerated prices just waiting for a sucker!! Bottom Line.. read the reviews and decide for yourself.

Show me evidence for even performance. As far as I know, an OCed 7970 (and they do OC very well) will come up to just about reference 680 performance, but then you can OC the 680 too.

The GTX 680 beats the 7970 fairly consistently, everywhere except Metro and AVP as far as I know. And this is coming from someone who owns 2x 7970.

Do you think it is absolutely worth waiting for? I mean, are we talking about a couple of weeks until vendors have 680s regularly available or like late June - early July?

Couple weeks, you may have to grab one quick as they come back into stock, but they'll be here before June.

It seems Diablo III isn't demanding at all..
About Guild Wars 2.. I've been in 1 Beta now on my brothers pc.. 2x4870.. on lowest settings it lagged a bit .. BUT that was most likely because it's still a beta... I've heard somewhere that the game only supported 1 core yet, and because of that the even the highest end builds seemed to have lagg.. So wait for another Beta with performance fix on GW2 .... But i don't think it needs more than 7970 to max out..

You should consider looking at the 670, its performance isnt too behind the 680 and it will be more affordable.
