Hey folks. Just built a new computer, and when I turn it on I hear it whirring and booting up but the monitor remains in standby.

Monitor is an old 20something inch dell, card is XFX HD-695X-CDFC Radeon HD 6950, motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-H61MA-D3V LGA 1155 Intel H61 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard.

Something I noticed, the VGA port is on the motherboard and not the graphics card. Is it possible the monitor is too old for this particular card?

You need a DVI-VGA adapter that from the info from Newegg your card did not come with. You should be able to find one on Newegg. With a discrete graphics card the onboard video is usually disabled so if you plugged the monitor into the onboard with the 6950 inserted you will get no video from it. Get the DVI-VGA adapter and you should be fine.
