In this chart you can see that the 7870 is one level higher than the 570 so it stands to reason the two 7870's will be better also.
The motherboard has two x16 slots with 16 lanes and one x4 slot with 4 lanes and all three are full length , it's just that the third slot has only 4 lanes of bandwith left so that's why it's a x4 slot.

This was a bit confusing to me, I guess.

So, there are two x16 slots and each have 16 lanes? Meaning, each can run at x16 for dualx16 yes?

Yes when you look at the details page of the card it shows x16 , x16 , x4 so the two slots that are x16 have the full 16 lanes each. Even if the slots said x8 x8 the slots would be giving the same performance because the video cards cannot saturate the slots anyway.

680 setup ? Where did that come from I thought you were talking about the GTX 570? If your considering the 680 vs two 7870's I would have to take the 680 , because you have the option of adding another later and for now the 680 will give you enough performance for any game.

Yeah that is what I have been reading for the last 15 minutes or so.. Which is really deterring me away from 2 mid range cards. Might do that, but we shall see. Too bad newegg is plum sold out.
