Looking for suggestions on what to buy

I'm helping a friend build/upgrade his old compute, and I need to get a new motherboard, processor, and memory. He has a budget of about $260 ,and he trying to build an okay gaming machine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW he has a Gtx 9800+, and a 550 watt power supply. Thanks :)

  1. RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws series 8GB

AMD build: Get this one if he may also be video editing or doing general computing that requires some grunt from the CPU.

Motherboard: AsRock 970 Extreme3 AM3+. This will give you room to go up to Bulldozer or Piledriver later.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

Intel build: This one is better optimized for gaming, but will lack the raw power and upgradability of the AMD build above.

    CPU: Intel i3 2120

    Motherboard: ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM

I personally would go for the AMD, the difference between the two is minimal in gaming and its a much easier upgrade to a better CPU later on.

  3. Do either of you know if the ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard link will fit in a hp pavilion a1250n case? Or should I just get a new case?
  4. The motherboard that was in the case was a MS-7184, which is a micro ATX board, so it should fit in. Though I would get a new case, in general pre-builts have horrible cooling, especially business type machines which I think that is. A HAF 912 or Zalman Z9+ is a cheap budget case that is pretty goo for their costs (~$60).
