On a recent backpack trip, we got our Canon s50 wet in a torrential
downpour/hailstorm (we were more concerned about hypthermia in humans
than keeping the camera dry!).

Sent it in to Canon; $167.95 to repair and send it back. They are
offering a refurbished S70 instead of fixing the s50. The price is
$249. Is this a good deal? The spouse is leary of refurbished items.
We loved the S50 and I'd like to stay with a Canon regardless of what
we do (spouse favors Olympus Stylus models because they are somewhat
weatherproof, but I like the photo quality I get from the S50. . . )

Any opinions are welcome.

That's a pretty significant price difference. I'd only go for the refurb
if it comes with an "as new" warranty - say a year from the time you
receive it.

Refurbished units are often just cameras that have been purchased and
returned with nothing wrong (the manufacturer just tests and repackages
them), but they're sometimes returned cameras that didn't work and have
been repaired at the factory. There's no way of telling which you're
going to end up with so you might just end up with someone else's
repaired camera for $70 more than you would have paid for your own
repaired camera!

The repaired S50 might be repaired unit that originally belonged
to someone else too. There's no guarantee they'll send his back.

LOL. I hadn't thought of that but you're absolutely right.

Tell your spouse that your fixed and returned S50 will be a
refurbished camera. :-)
