I purchaseda 9600GSO a couple or three years ago and I like to check the the Hierarchy Chart every few months for a good upgraded.

So i see that the GT440 is now the best buy under $100. Sounds good, then I check the hierarchy chart and see that it's one level BELOW the 9600.

The 440 has more cores (96/48), faster core clock (810/650) faster memory (1600 gddr5/900 gddr3)

Yet it's slower? Am I missing something?

The only difference I see is the memory bus width. 128 for the gt440 and 256 for the 9600.

Is the memory bus that much of a handicap? I would think that with all the other improved specs, the 440 should blow the 9600 away.

Has NVidia gone throught a couple of generation of new designs to produce a slower card?

I'm confused.

That is an incredible price for a 256 bit memory bus card. The GT 520 is only a 64 bit memory bus card and that takes some people by surprise.

But the 9600 GSO is a mid level card for the GeForce 9 series and the GT 440 is an entry level card, so that is why the GT440 is slower, that and the memory bus.

The GTS 450 is closer to what you are looking for, it is 4 levels higher than the 9600 GSO.

The GT 440 is the bottom of the line (entry level) for the GT 4xx series and the 9600GSO was a pretty good card in its day.

What did you pay for the 9600GSO?

And the above link did not work for me, I wonder if anyone else had trouble with it?

I paid $69 in 2/2009 from NewEgg.

EVGA 512-P3-N963-TR GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI

You can see why I'm surprised that 3 years later a card for more money is slower.
