What is wrong with my desktop?

Hello all,

I think my desktop is PMS'ing:

It (the PC) cannot see my Logitech G11 keyboard nor my Razer diamondback 3G mouse (which actually lights up upon booting, but doesnt seem to work). All keyboards should flash all "lock" lights once upon booting (caps lock, scroll lock & num lock) but the G11 doesn't, so I don't know whats wrong with it, or with the desktop (it used to flash but then it stopped all of a sudden).

Southbridge problem maybe?

Since the desktop cannot "see" the USB G11 and diamondback, I bought a PS2 keyboard and mouse and plugged them in with the G11 and diamondback connected via USB and did the following:

SOMEtimes, when I turn the PC on, it attempts to boot but fails and starts beeping constantly for 3 - 5 seconds then turns off.
On other trials, it DOES boot successfully and I'm able to log into windows 7 and move the mouse for a few seconds, after which it freezes altogether, no keyboard or mouse functionality.

All of this started happening after there was a storm, so I THINK lightning hit the house and did something to the desktop. I don't know if the PSU protects the computer's hardware from such things.
The storm happened while the computer was off.

What might be wrong with the desktop?

How can I troubleshoot by testing each hardware component individually and not just buying a new motherboard and not solving the problem?

well there is burn in test(get standard[free])

Then there is MEM test(you will have to boot off of the program[get the usb version of it and boot off the usb]) also you will need to boot of one stick at a time and make sure its in the primary bus.

have fun this will take you quite a bit of time so holio

first off your usb keyboard on mouse may be the issue or the usb port on the mb. never plug both usb and ps2 keyboards at the same time..i would plug in the ps keyboard and i would use the clear cmos jumper to clear the cmos out. i would then go into the cmos hit f5 factory default save and reboot and go back into the cmos and look that the usb port is on and it says usb keyboard or legacy support is on. i would then boot into windows and unistall the mouse and keyboard drivers and install the newest ones. i would then power down and then plug in just the usb mouse. power back on and see if the mouse works fine.
if the mouse locks up unplug it and put back on the ps2 one. shut down and then plug in your keyboard if it locks up try them on another pc. if there working fine then your usb ports on the pc may have taken a hit. the cheap fix would be a pci to usb card.
