I saw on one of the financial programs (so many it is hard to keep count)
that Oly had a substantial loss.

The previous quarter their imaging group reported a 24 billion yen
loss, which may be what you're thinking of. I didn't see anything for
the current quarter yet.
When a quarterly loss was looming at the semiconductor companies I used
to work for management and the financial guys would toss every possible
expense into the quarter, making that quarter look worse than it really
was so they could claim improvement the next quarter. Probably Oly did
the same thing so the 24 billion yen loss could have included a lot of
one-time costs. But they need to start showing a profit in the imaging
division in the next few quarters or the future of that group (and by
extension the 4/3 concept) would seem to be shaky.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that ... here's the key section for the imaging
group, I guess ...
(quote)
The forecast assumes that its imaging division, mainly digital cameras,
will record an operating loss of 13 billion yen in the six months to
September but then recover to a profit of 2 billion yen in the second
half of the financial year to March.
"Our sales and operating profit are pretty much in-line with our
original plan," Hideo Yamada, director and chief corporate officer,
told a news conference. "We still expect the imaging division to bounce
back to a small profit in the second half."
(end quote)
If they can hit their second half numbers the party continues. If they
miss the 2nd half numbers things will get interesting ...

Apparently the non-DSLR end of digital camera market is so cut-throat that
there's little profit in it for ANY manufacturer. It was DSLRs that brought
Nikon up--not point-and-shoots.
With Olympus basically out of the DSLR market (4:3 is going basically
nowhere), they may well be in trouble as a direct result.
