To put it simply, it has 4 physical cores but 8 virtual cores.

It means it has 4 physical cores amd 8 logical/virtual cores in hyperthreading. Because of those virtual cores it will make windows think you habe an 8 core cpu and help you in multi tasking but if youre going to buy a new i7 go with the 3770k it has a better socket.

They over-glorify it a little bit but it still does a good job of explaining  

Haha On applications that can use the hyper-threading you might get 10% to 20% extra performance over not having it. But there are applications (most of them) that won't use it. If you are gaming go with an Intel® Core™ i5-3570K if you are doing some video or other media creation work you might get an advantage out of it.
