I'm preparing to build my first computer. I'm impressed with the Lian-Li cases but have a general question about USB ports for any case. I currently have a Gateway that came with 2 ports on the front and 4 on the back. Do I need to research what's possible with each case manufacturer/model or does the motherboard determine how many ports will be available on the back? I'm not new to PC hardware but have never put one together from scratch. I currently have 6 USB peripherals plus a USB hub attached to my computer and would like to clean it up a little. My primary use is games and graphics (tablet). I'm looking at buying an ASUS SLI MB, AMD Athlon64 FX55, nVidia 6800 Ultra, a fast 19" LCD monitor, and other goodies.

Thanks for any help in advance.

almost all motherboard have 2 on the back, some have more. some have more usb ports on the board and supply an extra mounting bracket to put in one of the expansion slots that hold more ports. some dont come with this and assume you will plug front ports into them. you can buy these brackets separately.

Most MB have 2 ports built into the io at the back of board and some also include headers that allow you to add more usb ports. Adding more ports however is partly dependent on your case, some cases come with built in ports with wiring to attach to headers. If not included on your case which would be rare some mb`s include usb ports that you can add in a slot at the back of your pc.
