FX upgrade help

Last response: in Systems

Ok, originally back in Oct/Nov. I had planned on building a FX based system. I bought a Gigabyte FX990-UD3 mobo in anticpation for the new FX chip. However, after seeing the bench marks I could not bring myself to pay close to $250/60ish for the FX8120 because of what INTEL was offering around the same price. I bought a PII 970 BE instead for 100 bucks at Fry's to hold me over til Piledriver. Recently I was browsing Newegg and saw the FX8120 for 149.99 usd. Also, recently picked up a MSI GTX 570 twin Frozr. Question is do you think nabbing one is justified? Will I see any real improvement with my setup? I use my comptuer very heavily for video editing. With some moderate gaming. Also, with the 970 cpu I plan on sticking it in a HTPC with parts I have accumlated with different builds. Thanks.

if you do Really heavy video editing i suggest you get a i7 3930k or atleast a i7 3770k

That would be a high price for minimal gain vs a CPU swap once Piledriver is out. You are suggesting he replace the entire platform. Bear in mind that AMD's CPUs perform extremely well in heavily threaded applications.

nah i have a 8120(i love it) but i don't think the change would be too significant im going to get the piledriver(but after about 6 months[prices will drop]) I recommend waiting then people won't bash on you so much and say it was the worst buy of you life(like me :p )

At the price of the I7 3930k + mobo, It would not even be realistic in what kind of return on investment I would get. I am big what I get for price per performance return. Hence why I purchase AMD. Sure the Intel chips beat (at some things far surpass) AMD chips but at what cost. Honestly, it gets to a piont where a person can not really tell real world difference for the price they paid to get the extra little bit of "umpff". I'm sorry not starting a flame/troll thread.

exactly how much money can you spend?

Just wanted to know if the 149.99 usd would be worth it vs the 970BE I have now. And not have to do the perpetual "wait til the new tech" hits waiting game with the Piledriver release. I have already did a nice little upgrade with my GPU from a Gtx 550 ti to a Gtx 570.

ok no it's not worth it given a new version is coming out soon

I do think if the new one is over 230 just go 8120 unless it get really good review but yeah i recommend that you don't get it quite yet

The 970BE to Bulldozer is somewhat of a lateral move. Piledriver is already available in APU form now. The CPU version will be out before back to school, from what I've heard.

Ya. I think it is more of I don't want to be let down again with the Piledriver release and trying to justifiy spending money on the FX8120. Maybe it is buyers remorse, sigh.

Clock for clock Piledriver looks to be anywhere from 10-20% faster.

I agree with this statement. AMD's a great platform - I'm sure you'll be very happy with a new 8-core piledriver CPU. Good luck on your decision... :)

Wait for pile driver, then wait after pile driver to see if its crap. i should have waited to see for my self how crappy it was then i would have gotten intel right off the bat.

You dont have to wait to see how good piledriver is .

PD cores are available in Trinity APU's and that gets tested in an article on the home page of this website

If I was the OP I'd wait a little longer for PD

While that may be true don't forgot how AMD lured everyone with bulldozer by showing a few benchmarks that made it look good at the time... I am not a Intel fan boy. I respect AMD for trying to be the affordable option but why waste so much on a CPU and Mobo where if you match it right you can get a better deal with intel.... pile driver won't surpass sandy bridge i don't believe but as long as it touches it a little better than bull dozer i'm sold and won't have to get a whole new mobo

Bulldozer surpasses sandy bridge in many benchmarks

and thats despite being handicapped by windows 7 not being able to optimize threading through cores

The combined gains of moving to windows 8 and the PD refresh are substantial . The processors pricing will ultimately determine their value , but there is no reason to think intel is the only option
And definitely no reason for the OP to change from AMD when he has most of the hardware already

Right, i fully understand. But just want everyone to understand, that when pile driver comes out, they won't be buying ivy bridge or 2011 grade performance

Thats not the result the comparison of the two module piledriver APU's suggests when you compare it to the two core intel i3 .

The PD trinity beat the sb processor pretty much every where

you moron... show me a benchmark that proves the FX 8150 beats the i7 2600k or the i5 2500k.

Ive already done that once today but evidently you were too busy trolling to bother looking

There are many other examples if you had bothered to find any

or made any effort to understand BD's strengths and weaknesses

Piledriver will be out by the end of the year.

why spend $150 for as chip you'll only use a few months?
Homebuilt system Authority

^agreed but if you have the extra money and will be able to buy the piledrive when it is release then sure go ahead the 8120 is a nice proccessor i really like it... it is really easy to overclock :)
Homebuilt system Authority

yeah im going to do a major upgrade in about 4-6 months or so and I think im going to either get that or a intel cpu... i really hope the piledrivers are good because if they are that would save me having to get a new mobo(aka 180$)
Homebuilt system Master

in my view, the 8120 is a lateral move compared to your 970, at best (its slower in some apps, faster in others, but overall a wash), meanwhile, in just 2-4 months (either back to school or christmas shopping), Piledriver will be out, and that $150 8120 will have been pointless.

from the Trinity previews as an APU, I think Piledriver will be competitive with Sandy Bridge in performance.
