Upgrading HD 6850

My current system:

MSI 870A-G54 mobo
AMD Phenom II 955 BE @3.8GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1333
CORSAIR Builder Series CX600
Spinpoint F3 500GB
GIGABYTE HD 6850
Antec Three Hundred Illusion
Asus ML238H 23" Full HD running at 1920x1080

This system is used mostly for gaming, currently SWTOR and will be picking up Diablo III soon.
My upgrade budget is 250-350 dollar range with the purhase to be made this comming week. I usually use Newegg for my computer parts but have bought from Tigerdirect and Amazon as well as Ebay, where ever I can get the most bang for my buck.

I know that my PSU only having 2 six pin PCI cables limits my higher end choices, I was thinking something like the HD 7870, I want the upgrade to be signifigant enough that it is noticeable right away.

More about upgrading 6850
  1. well i would typically say the 7870 (Sapphire OC or MSI Twin Frozr) .. but someone who gets it now without considering the 670 will be be kicking himself.. its only 40 -50$ more

Depending on the chosen model of 7870 the 670 can be as much as $70 more currently, is the performance of the 670 that much better?
  3. Sadly well yes... the 670 is more like competition for the 7970... ATI has to cut prices or this 670 will ruin them..

run through this reveiw on anandtech if that helps

It is nice performance, but still $50 over the max budget point that it took me 2 months to negotiate with the wife as is :( the 250-350 is firm with her pushing for 250 and me pushing for 350 and that budget has to include shipping, she wont fall for me saying that the extra is for shipping...again
  5. well then if you aint sneaking off money for next months groceries... 7870..

had the same issue here... upgraded from a 6850 myself. love the 7870.. its only a small hurt that it isnt the 670:)..

but you'll do good for most stuff... and frankly it can give pretty good 1980 performance.. its only the 2K plus resolutions that arent that brilliant.

Sounds good, I dont play any of the games that make GPU's cry, the most intense game I currently am playing is SWTOR and the 6850 handles it ok at high settings, just not maxed settings and I want to max. As for resoloution, I dont see myself going for any higher resoloution anytime soon, my current setup, the monitor barely fits.
  12. Then there you have it.. the missus will be happy..

ps. what manufacturer you getting presumably msi sapphire asus like rt? get the OC edns.. they worth the extra 10-20 bucks
  13. I was looking at the powercolor one OC'd to 1100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131466
  14. Well the powercolour is a bit faster compared to the sapphire and Asus. But the tradeoff is higher noise and heat.

Not really fond of powercolour. If u do want it to be that bit faster look for the his iceQ turbo. Though I'd still put my money on the sapphire especially for the excellent oc performance where the diff btwn the higher clocked cards and sapphire is next to nothing.
  15. Ive found nvidia to run SWTOR quite a bit better than AMD, so keep that in mind. My guildmate has the same CPU as me, (2500k) but he has a 6950 and i have a gtx 465, i get 20-30 more fps than him in the fleet. 6950 on paper should smoke my gtx 465 but its not happening.

In my opinion wait for the 660ti or buy a gtx 570 when they go on sale for 260-270 bucks.
  16. if SWTOR is your gig, and if you haven't already, then try these out also

  17. Well I took your advice, waited a bit and saved a bit more and am now waiting on the delivery of my GTX 670
