So I have a friend who wants to upgrade his computer so he can run modern games, he has a tight budget of $300 and this is what he plans to purchase:

Gigabyte GeForce GT 630 2GB
ASRock 880GM-LE FX Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 945
G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT (2x4GB) DDR3

I/he would like to know how this upgrade could run modern games like:
Battlefield 3
Diablo 3
Strategy games
etc.

Any other opinions and advice would be super helpful :)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Depends on what resolution he'll be using. However, I'm going to say he should be able to do medium, sometimes high settings. Based on tom's little hierarchy chart, its the same tier as a 8800 GT 256 MB. I have the 8800 GT 512 MB, and I was gaming on medium to ultra on modern games.

this it a review of the GTX 640 which is bump above and it couldn't handle BF3 at any resolution (minimum frame rates should be 30+ with 40 being the target.

Amazon has a good deal on the AMD A6 3670K right now. he should be able to play BF on MED setting (maybe some on high) and get 30+ min frame rates @1080P.

GPU $130

Minimum FPS is 31 for the GTX 640 on medium settings at 1280 x 1024, with 36 FPS being average. That is pretty playable. Straight from the link you posted. Though the 440 (which is the 630) is definitely having problems with it on medium settings, so in that respect it wouldn't be a very good card at all...

Good one, But how about lowering RAM down to 4GB then get the HD 7750 over HD 6670.

for gaming the GTX 560se is so far above a 6670 or 7750 even using hybrid CF.

Thanks for pointing that out, I was more referring to the more common gaming resolutions of 1680x1080 and 1920x1080. the card sucks for gaming without a doubt.
