Phenom II is Athlon II with an L3 cache (except for the Phenom II x4 840 and 850). That makes it better for gaming than Athlon II with the same core count and about the same CPU frequency.

Someone is ignorant of the subject. L3 matters, at least in this situation. In the case of a Trinity A10-5800K versus an FX-4300, it's generally less important from what I've seen, but in the case of an Athlon II versus a Phenom II, this is not true. Gaming is generally one of the most cache-sensitive workloads, especially among consumer applications.

It really depends on the Graphics card, I have a Phenom II 965 BE, and I get similar results to a friend using an Athlon II x3 @ 3.2Ghz, using my Graphics card, though when it comes to more CPU intensive games, and CPU bound Anti-Alliasing, I beat him by a mile with an average of 40% more FPS. Though he does only have 3 cores, I don't think that really applies since most games only use up to 2 cores.

L3 cache matters for most games. There's a benchmark regarding this, comparing a Phenom II with an Athlon II with both running at the same clock speed. Just google it.
