I currently have a P2 350mhz processor, Diamond Viper 550 video card, and 1 gig of ram. I am connecting with a 56k modem (maxing out at 56k) which could be the problem with high ping rates. Can upgrading my video card to a GeForce2 or GeForce3 help? Please advise, any suggestions would be appreciated.
A new grafx card will have absolutely no impact on your ping (its just the latency between your computer and the server you're connecting to). But it will improve your frame rates and thus make games easier to play.
I would definitely suggest upgrading to a faster video card. It would increase your personal game performace a great deal. I'd suggest a GeForce 3, if you have the cash. If not, go for something more affordable, like a 64MB GeForce 2 MX-400. This might increase your ping a bit, but an even better thing to go would be to get Cable or DSL internet access. Many newer games require these high bandwidth connections to perform well over the internet
I bet if you cut some of that RAM out you might do better as well. It won't help your ping but may improve system performance. Sometimes too much RAM could slow a computer down. I'd try benchmarking it with different amounts of RAM to see if you could gain by removing some of it. The gains may be very small and if you use this machine for video editng and such I would reccomend you stay with what you got.
The GeForce3 is a great card but for the same price you could seriously upgrade other components. $350 could by you a DSL or cable installation and a couple months of service.
To HELL with your damned cookie.... ptooo!! Change the signature of the week
1st thing I would consider is upgrading your CPU. Most likely with a PII 350 you are running a mobo with a BX chipset and Slot 1 CPU. With the latest bios update you should be able to install a PIII 750 (if you can find a slot 1 version). Check with your mobo makers site.
If not I would reloace the mobo and cpu. You can get a decent mother board and CPU for less than the price of a GF3.
A fast GPU will do little to speed-up a system with a slow CPU.
