You mean besides one is hardware and the other is software?

Generally, hardware firewalls are more reliable and harder to hack, but software firewalls are good for laptops because they are always providing protection, even on networks that have no hardware firewall.

Also, software firewalls protect you from other computers on your network, so often they are installed along with a hardware firewall.
