How many wireless port does a wireless router has?

I heard different answers from different people. One told me that a wireless router with 4 hard-wired ports can accommodate 256 wireless ports. I saw the specs for some routers sucha s linksys and netgear, all they say is that it has 4 hardwired and wireless ports. I research through different websites but none too clear. can someone enlighten me?
