Version will not change on Radeon driver update

I've been having some difficulty updating my Radeon 5870 video card drivers. Below is what it is listed:

Current:
Catalyst Version: 12.1

Latest:
Catalyst Version: 12.4

So I download 12.4, go through the uninstall process via control panel with the AMD install manager, re-install the new driver package downloaded, go back to the catalyst control panel and it still says 12.1. I've downloaded from the AMD site several times to make sure it wasn't the download.

Also, when I install the supposed new driver package, I noticed my previous profile settings are still there.

I'm not sure if I need to go through a completely different uninstall routine, or am doing something wrong?

Suggestions to look at?

you can try booting to safe mode by pressing f8, go to control panel and uinstall the old drivers. reboot and install the new drivers, restart

Tried that, the installer said it will not work in safe mode.

I think the version checking is just wrong. Looking at the driver file stats it seems like it is the latest driver and its reporting 12.1 rather than 12.1. I think its all just buggy.
