I have an n600 gigabit router. I also have a 5-port gigabit desktop switch. Are there any benefits to using the switch over my router for my wired lan? Also, would the switch at least help reduce the wear and tear on my router, or is that negligible? Basically, do I need the switch or not?

If your system is the only one on the network, definitely go with the router. Switches simply split a connection, but the router has actual security built in (firewall, MAC filtering, etc).
