Expensive motherboard then cheaper processor or expensive processor then cheaper

Im on a budget build here and my first time.
Im thinking of building a sandy bridge computer and plans of upgrading in the future. i'd like to have a gaming computer when the time comes i want to upgrade but since this is my first build I want it to be good atleast. Do i go for an i3 and just buy an h61 chipset board? or go g550 and have z68 chipset board?
