6850 or 7850 dillema - will my CPU be a bottleneck?

Hi guys. I'm trying to decide between 6850 and its successor, 7850.

The latter is obviously more powerful (and expansive), but will it be hampered by my relatively weak CPU? Is the diminished difference worth spending the extra bucks?

At 60% more $, the 7850 will perform around 40% more fps in many games at slightly less power. But GPU temperature will be 8-10% lower. Big plus is 7850 having 2GB VRAM which will be very useful for very high resolution.
If budget allows for the more expensive 7850, go for it.

PS: I would not worry too much about bottleneck. After all, a good GPU can always be brought forward to the next PC upgrade.

You may want to go cheaper on the GPU and spend some money upgrading to a more powerful power supply.

Thanks for the reply! I would like to reiterate the key question, though.

Unfortunately, I won't be upgrading again for a couple of years, by which time both 6850 and 7850 will be ancient and up for replacement anyway. Therefore, I have to make the decision solely in the context of my current system. So, will my current CPU be a significant bottleneck or not?

If you are playing at 1920x1080 or less, the 6850 will be enough & a good match to your current processor.

I know I could use a little more power, but I know people have had 400W power supplies handle 6850 without problems. beQuiet is a decent manufacturer and my 12V rails seem to have plenty enough amperage, so there seems a good chance of it running smoothly. I'm prepared to buy a more powerful PSU if it turns out necessary.
