Server Configurations

November 22, 2012 5:46:45 PM

Hey Guys and Gals,

I need some help on a decision.

As i get closer to becoming certified on A+, i need to start running a server for education and general home usage.

I need a configuration that has Virtualization in order to run (Ubuntu or some sort of linux as Host) and Windows Server 2008 as a client if you will.

This server will be used as such

Local Minecraft Server Host 6 Players max cap ---> Linux probably.
File Sharing ---> Linux probably.
And Active Directory ---> Windows Server 2008 r2

I also need to have the server build/compile Android {C/Java} (involved into custom rom development).

DATA REDUNDANCY! Due to the data partitions being used for backups of data..

The current build i have right now is
Sempron 64 3200+ 1.8ghz EDIT* {No VT}
500 gb partitioned into a 80 gig OS partition and rest used as data.
1 terrabyte drive used for client data.
2 gigs of ram
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition (work deal)

I do have older xeons that id like to use but dont have the options i need.
Gallatin Core 2.4Ghz Netburst Single Core + Hyperthreading {x2 available inventory} (Google for specs..)
8 gigs max ram supported with the Xeons.
^ now this processor doesnt support Virtualization nor doesnt have 64 bit support.. so that throws a wrench in the whole entire deal due to what i need the server for.

Would it be wise to move the server to a "new" LGA 775 setup with Core 2 Duos?
Or a "new" Xeon setup.

Just need some collaboration or another look on the topic.
