People have suggested the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor and the AMD
FX-6300 to me for my build. I have been told to use the X4 if I plan on doing any gaming because it would be around the same as the 6300 but 40$ cheaper. Here is my build, please tell me what one you would suggest.

Well, I'm on a budget. The max I would be able to spend on a CPU would be 130. Which of the two would be better? And if you can find a better one for around 130 or less please post it

The CPU is good enough. But, I'll suggest you to go for FX 6300. The Phenoms are already on the verge of extinction.
However, In either ways, it's the GPU that'd bottleneck in games, not the CPU.

So you think that spending an extra 40$ would be worth it?

For gaming and the money, the 965 is the route I would take.

I like the new PD chips but I don't think a 6300 is worth the extra money over the 965.

What would the 6300 be useful for?

Yes, as of now, if you compare the 2, you won't find any significant difference in gaming performance. But, in future, as games are made to properly utilize the multi-threading, the CPUs with more physical cores will definately perform better.

Moreover, FX are newer chips and Phenoms are no more being manufactured by AMD. So, better get a FX.

So the 6300 would be a better investment? I plan on having this computer for a few years before building a new one.

Edit- I am also looking at the FX-4300. Would this be better than the other 2 CPU's? http://pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd4300wmhkbox

The 6200 and the 4170 are both "bulldozer" chips. They were a bit of a disappointment. The new "pile driver" chips are what the bulldozer should have been. The second digit in their part numbers is a "3". 4300, 6300, 8320, 8350.

As for the investment aspect of the 6300, it's a good CPU, but I think you would see more "bang for your buck" in games by putting the extra $40 into an better video card. (Although you already bought the 7770)

If I were to upgrade from the 965 for "future" use, I would go to the 8320 or the 8350.
