I was wondering if someone could tell me which core is faster? I am looking at getting either the a64 3000 939 with Epox 9NDA3J, or Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939. I found the mobile a64 3000 on newegg here I like this one for the 1mb cache but I don't know how much it will help me. If I go with 754 socket I was thinking going for the DFI Lanparty board. I will be doing overclocking but i'm not sure how these two cores compare. What would be a better route for overclocking and gaming? I've seen that some of the 754's do as good, if not better than the 939s. I know that 939 has a better upgrade path, but I can't seem to find any good PCIe cards in stock to go with an nforce4 motherboard, so I was going to go AGP for at least the next 1.5 years and the dual channel memory (minimal boost)doesn't really convince me to go with s939 over s754.

I figure that from my sig, I will still be using my memory, dvd burner, PSU, case. I will be ordering either the x800xt, or 6800gt for new system. With knowing these specs which path do you think would give me best performance with overclocking and let me not have to upgrade again for at least 1.5 years? Also, would the 2 sticks of memory I have cause a problem if I was to go with s754?

The clawhammer I was looking at was the A64 in socket 754. If I went that way, I would pair it up with the DFI motherboard that I had mentioned. Since I will be doing overclocking, would the a64 3000 s939 512k cache, or the a64 3000 s754 1mb cache be better for mainly gaming?

The winchester, newcastle and sledgehammer cores are available in the 939 socket. The A64 3000+ you mentioned is the sledgehammer core, which is S754 and comes with 1mb of L2 cache. The A64 3000+ comes in three core styles. Newcastle, Winchester and Clawhammer, the latter being the only chip with 1mb L2 cache though. For performance right now I would go for the 754 and the 1MB L2 cache. They perform on par with the S939 A64 3200+ in benchmarks without even OCing.

The only one i see that is sledgehammer core is the A64 4000+ which also comes in a clawhammer as well. These are probably not worth the coin though. they clock as 2.4 mhz with 1mb L2 cache. You can get that same configuration from the S754 3700+ for a fraction of the cost.

The best bang for your buck though is probably going to be your A64 3200+ though. The 3000+ clawhammer has 1.8mhz clock and 1mb L2 but for $27 more you can get the 3200+ Newcastle which only has 512 L2 cache but @ 2.2mhz.

I think you would be happy with either of those and frankly the 3000+ with it's 1MB of L2 is probably nearly as fast as the 3200+ Newcastle.

To get a 3000+ in a 939 socket you will need the Winchester core.

would s754 OC good as long as I get a good cooler like the thermalright heatsink "xp-90"?

Compared to the 939 Winchester, no. But 754's do overclock nicely, just not as high as 939. But then again, 754's of the same rating as their 939 counterparts already have a higher clock.

I have a s754 3200+ It has been clocked to 2.45 almost since day one. I have never bothered to change the hsf or TIM. Why should I, when I'm getting 4000+ perf, at a max temp of 52c. I have been running F@H at 100% cpu usage for almost a month no problems.
I am convinced this is the max my chip will do. I have heard that some winchesters dont get that high. I do want to find out for myself, but there just isn't a board I like well enough to spend what they are asking.
Nforce is best for ocing.

I've been itching to overclock the wife's machine (754-3000 on an MSI Neo Platinum mb), but she made me promise not to. So much potential...

AMD needs a new core for using different types of memory since the memory controller is on-die. The Sledgehammer core uses registered memory and is for Socket 940, the FX-51 and FX-53 for 940 were Sledgehammers, but no processor for desktops, since those, has been a Sledgehammer. Today only Opterons are Sledgehammers.
Athlon 64 with 512KB cache is either Newcastle or crippled Clawhammer (no more of those, as they're expensive for AMD), Athlon 64 with 1MB is Clawhammer.

I have the same CPU (3200+, 2.0 GHz, 1MB) on the MSI Via MB. What do I need to do to get your OC results? Can I get your OC results?

Doubtful you'll hit En's numbers with a VIA chipset.
