auto retaliate?

is there any way to cause a character to automatically engage a mob in
combat when struck? lots of times i'm busy reading my quest log, or walk
away from the computer or something and come back to find that something
killed me, something that i could have easily beaten if i were, oh, say,
*actually attacking it*.

This very vague, but I recall seeing such an add-on. I believe it was at
curse-gaming.com, so check out their mods section. Sorry for being so
unprecise, but I play a caster, so I didn't pay much attention to it.

I can picture people parking a character near a mob, going afk/to work, and
the toon leveling by himself... albeit very slowly.

There is an AddOn named DefendYourself, but it gave me some problems while
using, like not being able to use buttons on Action Bars (they are there and
available but you can't click on them) and some other small things. But the
button problem was annoying (and pretty random on which ones you can't
click) when you need to use a skill but unable to because of this problem.
But DefendYourself did exactly what you wanted, so you may want to give a
try. I also hated that my character is standing still after finishing one of
the mobs that attacked while I was doing something else... :)

Well, I assume it is limited in that it doens't turn your character
round, so if you get attacked from behind, you are stuffed.
