I'd like to upgrade my PSU on my Gateway SX2801-05 slim pc.

Hello,
I understand it is nearly impossible to find a PSU to fit in a slim case, so I was wondering if I could possibly buy a regular size 400W PSU and just hook it up externally to compensate for a GPU(in this case, most likely will be a Geforce GT 430) that is better than the integrated graphics unit. If so, how would I know what kinds of plugs or conversion cords I would need to be make it compatible?
Sorry if that's all a bit confusing, but thanks anyway in advanced.

if you have a form factor case i think it would be best to buy a fullsize atx case like the antec 300 first then a power supply

but yes you can run a power supply outside of the case if your really that tight on cash

All of this information is very helpful, and I thank you for that, but i think I am going to just buy a PSU and have it outside the case with the case open. However I have read about conversion cables but I'm not 100% on them or if they would even be necessary.

in most cases you wont need conversion cables the main plugs are a 20+4, 4+4, molex, and e sata if your not switching cases you really dont have much to worry about in terms of length of them

with it being a slimline pc tho you might want to check to make sure the pcie brackets are fullsize or not and if your motherboard has a 16x slot on it, i had a smallformfactor acer, because of how slim it was my only videocard option was low profile cards, and those are for sure not powerhouses

Yeah, I've taken that into full consideration and found a Graphics card that is "Low profile"

Edit: Also, it does have one PCI-E x16 slot.
