I3-2100 vs FX4300 / FX6300

Hi guys,

Alright here's my problem. I'm currently using the iRacing simulator. I'm experiencing CPU bottlenecking with my i3-2100 and 6850. My GPU usage dips a fair bit in MSI Afterburner (70% - 80%), and the i3-2100 is fighting for its life.

Disappointed, I want to swap out the i3-2100 and B75 motherboard and sell them. Using some of the money I earn, I'm planning to get an FX-4300 / FX6300 with an AM3+ motherboard and overclock the CPU.

What I want to achieve:

1) Get rid of CPU bottlenecking

2) Have the ability to overclock my GPU as well if the new AMD CPUs will not bottleneck it.

Notes:

1) If there's anything notorious about iRacing, its an absolute clock speed hog. Decreasing the clock speed of my i3-2100 by 100Mhz at a time gives the sim a good whack and I see my FPS dipping. I have to be absolutely sure my new FX-4300 / FX6300 will not bottleneck my 6850.

2) As of now, the sim utilizes 2 cores, however there are plans in the future to increase the count to 3 cores for sound processing.

3) My power supply is a Corsair CX500 80+ certified, will that handle an overclocked FX-4300 / FX6300 and possibly and overclocked 6850 as well?

I would really appreciate your help folks,
Thanks

No, an FX 4XXX/6XXX won't solve your bottleneck problem. Coz the gaming performance of i3 2100 is nearly equal to the CPUs mentioned by you.
If you really want to eliminate bottleneck, get an i5 (at least i5 3450). As you said you want to overclock, then there can't be a better choice than i5 3570k. Get an ASUS P8Z77 Mobo with it.

If the game uses only two cores, and needs high clock speeds then the Core i3 will be much better than any AMD CPU that isn't higlhy overclocked.
the reason for that is because Intel's CPU's are much faster per clock, making each core of your CPU running at 3 GHZ as fast as a AMD FX core running at around 4.5.

So yeah... switching to a AMD CPU will be a huge downgrade for you.

IF you really think that your CPU is dragging you down, then consider buying a Core i5 2500K or 3570K and overclocking it.

Amd cpus like the ones you said are trying to compete with basic i3's. They are evenn worse then i3's at gaming. I have a 6850 and q9300 and I think my brpther has project cars and I will ask him what fps he gets at 1080p. By te way if you upgrade to any i5 quad it will be good enough. Dual cores like i3 where designed to be pushed to its limits for high end cards.

Ok fellas, now I am completely baffled!

Only yesterday, I was complaining about my i3-2100 not being up to par pushing the 6850 to the limit, with the GPU reaching a mere 70% - 80%, and the CPU fighting at around 90%.

Today I fired up the sim as usual. I was completely baffled to find my FPS running a good bit higher than usual at the same graphical settings, and even more so when I found my GPU usage pegged at a consistent 99%, with the i3-2100 sailing along at about 50%.

So... what in the world happened?! Where did I get this mysterious boost in power?! I can now run comfortably with a group of 20 cars and never see my FPS dip below 120! And this is at 1080p!

Safe to say you had stuff running in the background. If I game I close all intensive applications before gaming like web browsing hogs gpu memory and cpu speed and ram. I thought no way an i3 2100 will bottleneck a 6850. I have a 6850 with q9300 and its easy peasy for the q9300/
