AMD FX-8150 vs Intel i3-3225

Hey guys, I'm looking towards building a computer. Originally, I was going to just buy a pre-made computer but after doing a little research I figured out it would end up being slightly cheaper if I just built my own and I could possibly include some better hardware in the process.

I've narrowed the graphics card down that I would like to use to the ATI Radeon HD 7850, but now I'm having a problem deciding on processors. I first decided on the i3-3225, but after seeing that the price of the FX-8150 is actually just slightly higher than the i3 I would like to know which of these two processors would be the better of the two.

I am aiming at playing games mostly on this system and using it for programming, other than just general computing. It will be hooked up to a 32'' TV so it'll be running in 1080p. Under these given circumstances which processor would be better for me?

Thank You,
-Rev

I'm not sure if it matters but the games I'm planning on playing will be The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Diablo III and Dark Souls.

The i3 is by far the better choice. It will run most games better, and use less power doing so. The 6300 and 8320 are amd's best choices for gaming cpus for the buck.

Neither of those two. The Core i3-3220 is a better idea than the Core i3-3225. The only difference is the latter has better integrated graphics and costs more. You're getting a dedicated graphics card, so the integrated graphics will be disabled. So the net difference is that the 3225 costs more.

The FX 8150 is bad for gaming. An FX 6300 from the newer generation would be a better idea. This isn't quite going to match the Core i3-3220 in most games, but at least it's reasonably close. And any time you run into a well threaded game or other workload, the FX 6300 will thoroughly outperform the Core i3. It does have a much bigger power consumption though (but less than the FX 8150).

Thanks to both of you who answered. I have posted my build in the New Build section and in it i used the 3225 but I may now go back and change it to the 3220. I wasn't aware that the only difference is the integrated graphics, thanks for letting me know that!

What? Don't go and get the i3! Heck naw!

In all seriousness, just get a Phenom II x4 965 BE. Better value for money. That i3 is what, 2% better, in single threaded applications. However, the i3 is only a dual core. The 965 is a quad core, and betters the i3 in multi-threaded applications.

Go with the i3-3220.
The x4 965 is less powerful for gaming, the i3 ivy bridge almost beats that cpu in multi-threaded applications and has a much lower power consumption, no need to oc.
The only amd cpu nowadays recommended is the apu one.

The i3 is nice, but in multithreaded programs it falters. Take BF3 for example. The extra cores on the x4 really come in handy there. The FX-6300 is the same price as the i3, and it's great in multithreaded programs.

The Phenom II is generally inferior to the Core i3. The FX 6300 is a more direct competitor, and it boils down to the FX 6300 being clearly superior in multithreaded performance, the Core i3 being a little better in singlethreaded performance, and the FX 6300 using a lot more power.

I'm planning on putting this CPU in a system with an ATI Radeon HD 7850. Would you recommend keeping the i3-3220 or upgrading to an i5? And if so... which i5? there are so many of them lol. I won't be Overclocking btw so the K series wouldn't interest me much.

Not overclocking? The cheapest one among the following:

Core i5-3330
Core i5-3350P
Core i5-3450
Core i5-3470
Core i5-3550
Core i5-3570

I3 : i3-3220

I5 : i5-3470 (in most stores its the cheapest).
