Internet connection drop problem

Hello,I had a connection problem and the phone company replaced my router.I have a 5 month old hp desk top(windows 7) .I'm using wireless router.my lap top(vista) works on it fine but my desk top loses the internet often.it shows Im connect most of the time.I can be sitting next to the desk top with my lap top and it will drop the signal or something...my trouble shooting some times says default gateway.other times it will say ,timed out.I have had the phone company internet guy out here and he had me change the ip address and it worked for a day or so.I think it is automatically resetting the ip address to the old router.I even had my sons computer friend from college try and figure it out.we checked the wireless card an it says working properly.
