Are IBM hard drives OEM by seagate and Maxtor

I heard from others "IBM hard drives are OEM by seagate & Maxtor" they don't have their own manufacture line !!

Is that ture ? If it is, why everyone, at least in forum, says that IBM (GXP 40GB)has a quality one than seagate(normal IDE hard drive) .

I'm confused, I don't know which one to buy anymore..

IBM makes their own hard drives that are separate from Maxtor/Seagate. If you have ever seen the drives, they are set up distinctly differently, so the claim that IBM is a rebadge of a Maxtor is completely false. Most of the hard drive manufacturers are pretty good now so aside from the occasional problem set (IBM 40 Gb 75GXPs) you should be okay with most of the major brands. Find the size you need and stick to the mainstream stuff (Western Digital, Maxtor, IBM).
