Problems with removal of the stock i5-2400 heatsink/fan

I built my computer about a year ago, and I've finally decided I want to replace my processor fan and heatsink. However, when I attempt to remove the fan pins from the motherboard it seems as if I am pulling too hard. I really don't want to damage the motherboard or processor, but from what I have seen online the stock fan does require some force to remove. If it is only happening to me I think I might not be able to replace the fan, so has anybody else had this problem before?

  1. once the pins are undone sometimes the thermal paste has a really good grip

try using a twisting motion to break the suction rather than pulling straight up
  2. Good practice as well is to turn the machine on before taking it of so you got some heat in the paste. Makes it more manageable.
