I'm considering a new phone (Razr) and noticed that the frequencys are 800,
900, 1800, and 1900. The phone that I have now has the same frequencys
except it has 850mhz instead of 800. I would assume that there is a
difference here but I don't know how it will affect reception. If someone
could explain what the difference is I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Steve

There isn't. GSM 850 is the same spectrum as TDMA 800 and CDMA 800.

800 and 850 are basically the same thing. 850 is closer to the actual
frequencies used. For some reason when GSM was introduced to
"cellular" it was decided that they'd call it GSM 850 rather than GSM
800. It's the same thing.

Presumably to better distinguish it from "TDMA 800" (D-AMPS, IS-136).

Many (most?) people don't understand the difference in standards.
