Parts I have picked out thus far:

AMD A8-3850 2.9GHz Quad-Core FM1 Radeon 6550D
Biostar A75MG FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) mATX $146.98 APU & Mobo combo deal
Corsair XMS3 Dominator 2X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 | $34.75
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB 3.5IN 16MB Cache SATA3 |$69.99
Visiontek 500w ATX | $29.99
ASUS 24x SATA DVD Writer]| $19.99
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit | $99.99

Including Shipping and Taxes (about $67 extra) | $468.77

I could swap out the A8 APU for an older A4 and save about $40; worth it? Mostly concerned about the overall performance of this build as I am somewhat out of date when it comes to custom builds! Thanks in advance.

Try to get another PSU. Look for brands like corsair or XFX. Believe me, a PSU like these (with higher price tag) isn't a waste. It's a investment.

EDIT: Antec is great too
