curious cos i brought a 7970 from overclockers sent it back because it had terrible coil whine and they said it will take 2-5 days for them to send a new one instead i got a refund which i didnt want seeings i paid an extra £15 for saturday delivery so yep what would be better for gaming got £365 from the card and i get paid in 5 days so can spend a bit more if i have too

Coil whine is a commonly reported problem with the HD7900 series. Buy another, and risk the same thing again.

On the other hand, the GTX 670 is there: cheaper, faster, quieter, more energy efficient, better driver features, better drivers. It's kind of a no-brainer, for you in particular.

i agree on everything but faster, 670 is equal to a 7970, and right now my overclocked 7950 is at 680 performance. if i hadn't got a gpu yet i'd get the gtx 670.

coil whine ive heard about 7970's doing it but haven't heard of any 7950's having a problem

the 580 is good but it be a pretty significant drop from the 7970, the 670 would be a better bet.

yeah also with the pci.e 3.0 the gtx 670 or 7970 would gane more from the use of it from what ive heard also is there any bench marks for the 670 or any comparisons for it to the 7970?

PCI E 3.0 doesn't even matter unless you have an ivy bridge cpu. Otherwise you're just running on 2.1 :] regardless of card, mobo, blah blah blah.

PCI-e 3.0 is absolutely useless. Hell, at 16x connections even the gtx 680 doesn't saturate pci-e 1 (it's only going to saturate it in useless scenarios, like when it delivers 200+ fps)

i guessed that seeings that the human eye can only see up to 60fps i believe and my tv only shows that too but i play a lot of demanding games crysis 2 dx11 as well as the other crysis games just got metro 2 worlds 2. i know it would be useless for l4d2 and tf2 because even with the 6970 it hit over 200 at times but seeings i play crysis and metro soon would it help? plus i will be going sli or cf eventually and the board ive seen is dual 3.0 x 16 so ill still be getting that one in particular.

I would go for a 7950 and for AMD in general at least the problems are well known rather than a lengthy process of discovery as problems surface. As for the issue with the chokes if one doesn't care to much about warranty one can replace the chokes them selves and no more coil whine. On the plus side it will make the card more stable at high clocks.
