im builing a new pc for home use and am down to 2 HDD. the Noise leve is importaint, its in the bedroom, but so is reliability & speed...

40Gb models:

IBM 60GXP
Quantam Fireball Plus AS (with HDB - liquid bearings)

whats the better one and why?
any suggestions would be great =)

thanks

I believe the IBM is the quieter, cooler, and cheaper model.

I reckon the speed is about the same and I've had a Quantum Fireball for four years with no problems and heard plenty much good things about the 60GXP.

Since Quantum no longer manufactures hard drives, and the support options for the existing drives have been shifted to Maxtor ... I'd definitely go with the IBM. Plus, with the higher density platters, they are really fast IDE drives!

I've also found IBM drives to be fairly quiet, in comparison to other brands that I've used in the past. They certainly don't disturb my sleep, and my main system is also in a bedroom.

I agree with the above posts: the IBM 60GXP is the way to go. Their 60GXP line is even quieter than their 75GXPs.

The Fireball Plus AS is WAY quieter than the IBM. Do liquid bearings mean anything to you people? I was trying to find the Fujitsu drives with liquid bearings for ever. Oh well.

But in every other way, the IBM is better.

mm no not from what I've observed using the drives. And you can't really get much quieter than a 60GXP. The AS actuators still drill away when reading.. that is noticeably heard, the 60GXP doesn't. You may think I've got a faulty AS, but I've noticed on multiple AS drives, and the one I own hasn't produced any errors in the past 6 months. I'm not saying it's a bad drive to purchase if you found it for the right price, just the 60GXP I own is quieter and seems to perform a little better. But that part is much harder to quantify for myself on differnt systems and no benchmarks and therefore moot.

***check the jumpers 1st then check em again***

The 60GXP and 75GXP can be set to be silent or to make a slight noise with slightly more performance (not that I noticed any during testing).

Your more likely to have a noisier case fan or CPU fan (My Delta fan sounds like a jet engine, quite comfortably drowning every other noise out...)

My recommendation is go IBM - Pure speed...(Especially in RAID 0)

I've had a Fireball AS 20 GB and let me assure you it won't disturb your sleep, etc. and it's extremely fast compared to another 5400rpm Quantum I had earlier and makes less heat and noise too; BUT I've read reviews that say the IBM 60GXP is a much faster drive and well, it's new generation compared to AS. Check StorageReview.com for details...
