im making a custom pc and am up to the DVD\CD drive. It will be used for DVD moveis, CD audio\games, and CD copying (burner).

Im stuck between 2 drives:

a) Toshiba SD-M1502 16/48 (leeaning towars this - quieter? hat digital out on tray version)
b) Pioneer 16x 116 \ S

- I prefer to tray version, but like digital out too...
- also how do these 2 compare for noise??

is there anything else to consider too?

thanks in advence :)

Ok, i'm not sure how true this is, but I heard Toshiba is the quieter of the 2 drives. Also, I was told the 12x is significantly quieter than the 16x (toshiba still). However, depends on how much CD reading speed is important since, well you won't view any DVD at 12X :). Good luck

Do you mean for programs and such (Encarta 2001 for eg) will be too slow on a 12x, better to get a 20x?

how noisy will that be?, i hear they arnt too quiet :-/

There aren't any 20x DVDs, I don't think.

A 12x is typically 32x CD, 16x is 40x CD. Not always true, but generally.

Go for the 12x if noise is a problem.

You picked the wrong ones. The best DVD drive is the LiteOn LTD-163.

The only real downside to this drive is the RPC2.

Maybe the RPC2 can be bypassed:

"I recently bought an LTD-163 dvd drive. all the information I can gather on this thing says that it's an RPC-2 drive. Evidently it pulls the region from the first DVD that you insert in to the drive. If you were to insert an RCE disk first thing, (i believe which are marked as region 0) would this effectively unlock the region on the drive?
I've wondered if this would be a solution to all the drives that operate in this manner.

Ok, now if this solution doesn't work, I have noticed that there are three sets of jumper pins on the lower right hand corner on the back of the drive (this is in addition to the ma/sl/cs jumper pins). I have not been able to find anything documenting these pins, official or unoffical. does anyone by chance know anything or have any suggestions? the drive came with non of them being jumpered but I intend to do some experimenting. "

The Pioneer may be a little faster, but the lite on has been verified to do everything well, while the www.storagereview.com guys don't test for stuff like PSX(playstation) disc copying and sub channel data and 90-99 min cd reading and clonecd performance.

I have the Pioneer 116, and it's awesome. I don't have any problems with it being too loud or anything like that. I have no other experience with dvd drives other than this one, but I prefer the slot.

Why are you reading stuff off the CD, anyway? That'd only be between levels, and only if you don't do a full install of the game.
