Hello Guys. I have a 1366x768 monitor and I don't think I'm gonna change it anytime soon. I play games on it all the time, here's my config :

Intel E5200 Dual Core OCed to 3.0 GHz
Gigabyte G31M-ES2C Mobo
2GB RAM
NVidia Geforce 9600GT 1GB GDDR3
Generic 450W PSU

My rig served me well for the past years, but now when it comes to modern games, (eg BF3, Crysis 2) it doesn't seem to run smooth in max settings, and I'm kind of not the type of guy to enjoy playing with the lowest graphics settings. So, I'm thinking of upgrading the PC. My eyes are on this setup :

Core i5 2500k / One of the few Ivy Bridge CPUs
Add some 4-8 GB RAM
Geforce GTX 560

So, the thing is, I sometimes think the above setup is an overkill for that resolution. What do you think? What would be the optimal setup (futureproof) for that particular resolution? Help Plz... :)

Looks about right if you're planning on good framerates on Ultra in both of those games. The i5 will definitely help at your low resolution. If you're planning on a GTX 560 you might need to replace your PSU.

Futureproof would be a Radeon HD 7850, but that's $70 more. Up to you though.

I would call that a middle of the road setup. More and more current games are recommending a quad core cpu and 4GB or more of RAM. I imagine that you could max most games at that resolution with a gtx 560 but I bet there are still some like BF3 that it may not be able to. I don't think I would call any of that setup overkill. Why are you stuck at 1366x768? That is the resloution of my 15" laptop screen. There is a huge difference between that and 1920x1080.

This shows a 560 ti running 1680x1050 in high settings. BF3 gets 61FPS on average.

It is likely that on Ultra you probably won't be able to maintain 60FPS at 1366x768with a gtx 560. On high it should be easy or if you go with the 560 ti you will probably be able to maintain 60fps in ultra at that resolution. The 560 is basically a 460 with a few more cores and a faster gpu and mem clock so it will likely fall somewhere in between the 460 and the 560 ti in the benchmarks I linked.
