So I have used Linux before. Basically what I mean by used is that I installed it and set my resolution so it looked cool, and then I said "I'm running Linux". I find it really hard to grasp everything about it. I look at installing a program and read about compiling the kernal and all this other stuff that I don't understand.

My question is this ... I have been looking for a refrence guide for Linux. I can't find one that is easy to understand and gives details about what everything is. I have read a lot of things so far, but hands on is how I learn best ...

Anyone have any websites that are easy to understand and maybe have tutorials? Any books you suggest reading? I would really appreciate it because I really want to learn this now!

Books:
Sam's teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (for a real quick tutorial)
O'Rielly's Running Linux (for something much more thorough)

This book is a good one; You can also read it online at <A HREF="http://www.books24x7.com/library.asp?ct=toc.asp&bkid=1267" target="_new">http://www.books24x7.com/library.asp?ct=toc.asp&bkid=1267</A> if you subscribe. I'm reading it myself these days. I'm in a similar position regarding my Linux experience:

Linux Bible
-by Candace Leiden and Terry Collings ISBN: 0764546627
-Hungry Minds © 2001, 763 pages
-Great gateway to Linux guru-hood, starting from the very beginning.

Hope it helps!

I have never really liked the "Bible" and "Unleashed" books of any kind....it seems to me that most of the stuff they put in there are taken right from the HOWTO'S.

Hey your in the exact same boat as me. I really want to get down to the meat of Linux- hell I want to even be able to one day write my own drivers (and share of course)! How about sharing your experiences with some of these books- that is if you buy any of them.

BTW, I've got O'Reilly's which is very thorough, but I find myself getting lost a little because there's so much information. It also doesn't refer to Mandrake at all. It's also kind of outdated (1999, 3rd edition). It's the latest you can get right now, but computer technology evolves so fast...

Which distro are you using? -->OOPS...just saw it in RED. sorry

I will definitely post my experiences with these titles once I get them. I have been checking out this EBook that I have right now, but it's at a High level so it's hard to understand.

I'm also looking forward to compiling my own kernel and doing all sorts of things. I guess it all comes with time. I know all these older people that know all sorts of things, but I guess they have had more time to learn it then I. I always want to learn this stuff overnight.
