I want the best, most super-kickass Docsis 3, Wireless N Cable modem there is. It should come with DD-WRT or something better (if it exists) or be easy to flash to it.

Any suggestions?

DD-WRT only works on routers.

get a Cable modem like the Motorola SB6120 and separate router that supports DD-WRT like a Netgear 3500 or 3700, D-Link 825, Linksys E2000 or E3000.

I would stay away from comb Modem+Routers like the Motorola SBG6580 always have trouble.

What about the Medialink Wireless N router? The reviews seem good and it appears to support VPN passthrough.

If I'm going for a Linksys E2000 or E3000, would it make sense to splash out and go for the E4200, or am I just burning money?

Keep away from any of the Linksys E series.

I have the E4200 and Linksys firmware sucks, every update breaks something.

Tried with DD-WRT and Tomato, but the wireless performance is poor on 2.4ghz and 5ghz, finally RMA'ing mine and not blowing my own trumpet, I know what I was doing, heaven help a novice.
