I have a Dell Optiplex 620 that shuts down after pressing ctrl alt delete key sequence to get to the logon screen. The operating system is Windows XP Professional service pack 3.

Thanks for your help.

HI Alice,

Did you buy this computer from Dell? Do you have the OS CD?

Why do you have to use Ctl+Alt+ Del to load the OS? Does it have a Windows Administrator Password?

HI Pegger 3D,

I am not trying to load the OS. The computer boots up and since it is on a network you have to press the control alt delete sequence in order to get to the Windows logon screen. I do have the OS CD and the computer does have a Windows admin password but it won't help because the computer shuts down before the logon screen is available. Thanks. Alice

HI,

If you can get to the BIOS, change the boot sequence to load the CD and run System File Checker.

It's been a while since I had to do that from the CD, but it should give you that option to Repair.

This is not a re-install, but you may have to run Windows update afterwards.

SFC will look for missing or corrupt files and replace them.

If you have a floppy disc on the system, you can run it from a Command Line: cmd, then sfc/scannow. It will prompt you

That said, you could have a hardware issue. You can try re-seating the ram and testing the power supply.
