Amd athlon ii x4 640 or phenom ii x4 945

They are both almost the same and the athlon ii is $35 cheaper.

Both of them tie very close together. why does the phenom ii cost more for almost the same performance?

Thanks.

Both are vey similar. Both are quad core and both are clocked at 3.0 GHz. The big difference is the Phenom II has L3 cache the Athlon II doesn't. I would go with the Phenom II for the L3 cache. L3 cache gives about a 10 to 15% performance gain. The L3 cache is like L2 cache its built onto the CPU its a little slower then the L2 but is larger in size. Look at the cache as a staging area for the CPU it will load data onto the cache for quick access to the CPU.
