For a while now, I've been having this problem with my computer. At completely random times, it'll totally lock up, I can't do a thing besides press the reset button. It will generally happen after an extended period of time, but lately it's been happening at frequent intervals. I have not been able to find out why, it's nothing software related i don't think, all my drivers are updated. But, the other day, I tried putting in some USB 2.0 slots that came with my computer, and when i booted back up, it told me that my video card was not getting sufficient power. Is it possible that upgrading my 420 watt power supply will make this crashing problem go away? My system = ASUS k8v deluxe mobo, amd athlon 64 3000+ cpu, geforce fx 5900 128 meg card, sounderblaster live 5.1 sound card, 1024 megs of ram ( two different brands if that matters ), and the 420 watt power supply, need any more info?

it told me that my video card was not getting sufficient power.
Windows gave this message?

Anyways a PSU could cause this, but I would suspect other components first. What kind of 420 watt PSU do you have? If its generic, what are the amp ratings on the side of it (Ex: 12v+ : 16a).

I take it without hesistation, after you hit the reset button, everything works fine?

When was your last fresh install of Windows? (I assume you are running Windows XP?)

Do you know what your temps are like? Overheating can also do wierd things like this.

Most likely a problem with the power supply, most power supplies have combined outputs, putting more load on the system could generate that message at boot.

When I reboot the system, it works fine for bout 20 minutes and then it crashes again. My last fresh install of windows xp was about 2 months ago. I believe the PSU may be generic, all I can see on it is AMD Cool and Quiet. I also can't see the amp ratings on the side, but if I boot up the asusprobe i have installed on my computer, there are 3 numbers, +12v, +5v, +3.3v. The problem isn't heat related, when it crashes, it's at normal temperatures, about 45 C.

A simple test to see if your PSU is being overloaded is to unplug some unneccessary stuff (extra HDs, CD drives, extra case fans), and see if the problem goes away.

If it isn't a PSU being overloaded, and is just one going bad, the above test may or may not tell you anything.

When it comes to PC stuff, Crashman is always right, so if he says its most likely the PSU, its most likely the PSU.
