I really don't know much about Computers and how to put them together so I hope I can use this as a learning exp. Any advice on where I could learn the basics of how computers work would be much appreciated.

2000 grand can get you quite a bit of good hardware. Although preparing for Crossifre or SLI is good to do, for me as user of both in the past, they are just not good enough yet.
